Founder of Jennifer McColm Living Green Enterprises
Jennifer McColm’s interest in environment issues began at an early age. As a young girl, she tended her own organic garden at the family home in southern California. Where other children would have their own lemonade stands in front of their homes, Jennifer set up her own stand to sell organic strawberries and other organic produce. From that little stand, Jennifer went on to build up a chain of certified farmers’ markets throughout Los Angeles County. California Certified Farmers Markets is possibly the largest privately owned company in California operating certified farmers’ markets.
Jennifer was an early advocate of environmentally friendly products and produce. She promoted recycling and using alternative energy while still a student at Pepperdine University. Later, through her farmers’ markets, she advocated the importance of organic food, the dangers of pesticides and soon began educating people on the importance of a sustainable lifestyle.
In 1998, Jennifer fulfilled her childhood ambition of becoming a certified organic farmer. Her current organic garden, considerably larger than the one she tended as a child, feeds the McColm family (daughters Brittany and Brogan and son, Canyon) at their home in Calabasas. Jennifer also has her own organic vineyard as part of an agricultural and sustainable compound the McColm’s call home.
Jennifer has the honor to sit on the board advising the California Secretary of State for Agriculture and Food.
Apart from the farmers’ markets, Jennifer is also President of Jennifer McColm Certified, a certifying agency for all things sustainable and truly green, from organic produce to electric cars and to alternative energy systems.
Another part of Jennifer’s work is her role at Jennifer McColm’s Living Green Media – a producer of DVD’s and other media on sustainable living issues.
In 2002, Jennifer co-foundered a non-profit with the mission of encouraging schools to educate children on the importance of good nutrition and organic growing. Jennifer is one of the major financial contributors to the foundation which funds a “Gardens in Schools” program as well as making contributions to Habitat for Humanity, World Wildlife Fund, Pacific Lodge Boys Home, St. Joseph’s Indian School and many others.
Jennifer is the founder of the “Just Do One Thing Green” movement, an educational and advocacy group to promote sustainable lifestyle practices. For her charitable and educational work, government agencies, Cities, Chambers of Commerce, beautification associations and many other organizations have honored Jennifer.
